Name: Jade Curtiss
Series: Tales of the Abyss
Timeline: shortly after encountering Professor Nebilim

Personality: The Necromancer, a colonel, a skilled scientist and spellcaster, Jade Curtiss is a man of many hidden talents. Known mostly as Colonel for the Third Division of the Malkuth army, he holds himself with a quiet, passive pride and hidden strength. Although he's not a particularly noisy person, he can easily raise his voice and give commands when necessary, but this is often reserved for the battlefield. He can convince almost anyone to do something, answer a question, or step forward based on the tone of his voice, from gentle persuasion to sharp demands or something near a threat. But even so, Jade finds his own amusement in confusing people on his tone. When it comes to the little gang he travels with, they've often found him a tad alarming because the tone used in a situation would be so convincing.

The fascinating thing about Jade is he purposefully shrouds himself in mystery and can manipulate situations on will. Not just as a Colonel, Jade is quite a scary individual as a whole, whether one knows him or not. But, if anything, not knowing his secrets makes him a little less scary, since one is less likely to know or believe the rumors. Just his way with words is enough to get him to change situations to work in his favor, even if it has him resulting in blackmailing a royal (which he did, after planning quite far ahead) or lying to Luke's mother without batting an eye just so they could sneak away without worrying her.

But besides the wordplay, Jade's actually quite the comedian (depending on your humor, naturally). He's quite sarcastic, sometimes downright harsh, and because he can keep his tone so level, he tends to confuse people into believing he's being truly honest when he's really just entertaining himself. Because he's the oldest and tends to 'take charge' above Luke, he sometimes gets a little bossy with the children just to play around with them, like ordering Guy to explain something he easily knew the answer to himself, or telling Luke to do something unnecessary when in reality he's only trolling the young man. Sometimes his jokes fall flat with his serious tone--he's a master liar, which plays into his kidding remarks quite well. When it came to the Ant Lion Man in Chesedonia, Jade was quick to tell the group that the odd person had a family underneath the sand to which he threw their offerings, but with a shrug, he replied that it would have been a nice story were it true. Sometimes, one really has to wonder about this man.

However, he is definitely one scary being when he is mad. Although he controls his emotions with ease, he's not quite the most pleasant when he's unhappy. When he first faced Legretta and was quick to draw his weapon, he actually alarmed the group. During Luke's mishap at Akzeriuth, he actually had to leave the area to refrain from making any harsh, snarky remarks, and he held his tongue to keep from saying anything too mean. He's rarely mad enough to lash out, but when he does, it's definitely scary. But on the few instances when he's able to let loose--like when he went up against Dist, behind closed doors, he had the heather-haired God General screaming and begging forgiveness. (But this is normally when someone hits Jade in one of his few sore spots, like in the dealings of fomicry.) In a way, sometimes Jade feels satisfaction from getting revenge in small ways and having things work in his favor.

Thankfully, he's not just a troll. Jade's a very skilled wielder of the fonic artes, having taken, used, and mastered different aspects from a very young age. Currently, he can control the first six fonons, which is rare in and of itself, and he was even a powerful opponent when they had been sealed at the beginning. He can open nearly every fon slot in his body to make himself more powerful without the natural limitations of the body. When he was eight, he managed to manipulate his eyesight in order to give himself the ability of fonic sight, opening the fon slots in his eyes in order to amplify his own abilities. His glasses aren't used to correct his eyesight, but rather to maintain this ability and keep them from going out of control. He also helped invent fomicry, the science used to create replicas, both on living and non-living beings. From his experiments as the age of nine he had begun to hypothesize and write theories, of which Saphir (or Dist) aided with inventing the machinery to make this happen. He's known as the Father of Fomicry, but he's tried to keep this downplayed because he outlawed this science due to ethical and moral reasons. (Somewhere in there, he has a heart.)

Then, on the battlefield, Jade is nothing but a ruthless attacker. He's good in hand-to-hand combat, but he prefers using his spells in a fight. Due to his overpowered ability in the fonic artes, he's controlled and powerful when casting spells. But he's also quick on his toes, and very fit. This doesn't keep him from sneaky, teasing remarks on his own age, such as being too old or too slow for mere children's play despite having the physical prowess to keep up with them.

But even with all of these skills, Jade does his best to fit that role model status as many of the younger ones see him. He does his best to help them, and even though he doesn't like the concept of teaching he finds himself explaining things or helping them learn by his example or by telling them a correct way to do something through careful 'suggestion' (even if it comes out descending sometimes). He's not a complete nightmare to be around; under some circumstances. his company is preferred, even if he scares them from time to time. Overall, he's really not so bad... most of the time.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Physical Ability: Even without his fonic artes, Jade is quick on his feet and quite fit for a thirty-five-year-old man. He can hold his own in a fight, even if his abilities are stronger in the artes. Being a colonel of an army means he's got ability in there somewhere.
+ Mental Ability:
- Quick Thinking: He's good with coming up with lies or plans on the spot. This has gotten the little group out of many situations more times than they can count.
- Plans Ahead: He tends to think ahead in many situations, coming up with schemes and plans to aid their agenda into working flawlessly. Because he's more experienced, he tends to know when certain additional actions are needed, so he acts upon them and gets help when or if necessary.
- Level-Headed: He can control his emotions quite well and think through situations in a neutral mindset or think of a plan through to the fullest.
+ Kindness: despite how he acts, Jade is actually a rather caring person who tries to take care of those left in his charge. Many of his decisions are made so they're not hurt, or at least not as hurt as they could be. This isn't just for the little company he traveled with, but also with his soldiers and family, and even Dist.

x Hard to get along with: Even though much of his snark is just for fun, he has a habit of making others uncomfortable or just being colder than ice. Sad thing is he doesn't even care.
x Not Quite as Forgiving: When one's broken his trust, Jade becomes almost nothing but cold and harsh towards that person until they can manage to earn it back, but even then it's difficult to get him to trust them again. He doesn't attack them outright, but he doesn't go out of his way to be particularly kind to them either.
x Guilt Complex: This is usually what triggers his emotions. Due to both Fomicry and stopping people in the midst of the war, Jade tends to feel very guilty for what he and his actions have caused, especially when it's caused harm or brought death to another. He doesn't speak out on it, but seeing the fact that his science has harmed so many individuals and broken or changed so many lives really tears him up inside.
x Negative Reactions: When it comes to people like Peony who can easily get under Jade's skin, Jade tends to react more negatively or with more irritation in his nearly emotionless facade than planned, which makes him rather pissy or snippier than usual. He does not like when people crack his façade, and he either fights back with snide remarks or does his best to ignore it.

First Person Sample: [There's the most subtle sound of Jade clearing his breath before he holds the gear up to eye level, staring quite evenly into it.]

Johto, was it? That's the name of this region, according to the map. I had a few inquiries, if you would be so kind as to humor me with a few answers. Judging by the land and the creatures encountered thus far, I'm fairly certain this is not on a land mass known as 'Auldrant', is it? On the off chance that it is, can anyone direct me towards Malkuth, more notably Grand Chokmah or Keterberg? If not, could anyone, if possible at all, explain how I may have come in contact with a hyperresonance that could have summoned me here?

[But then he pauses. Too many discrepancies concern him into thinking that perhaps the people of this land may not understand what he's speaking of. So he decides to dumb it down a bit and focus on one of the few necessities.]

If all of that strikes you as gibberish, then could anyone please tell me where I may find lodgings for the night?

Third Person Sample:
This was nothing short of peculiar. The woman who had called herself his mother was hardly his age, but she didn't seem to understand--or rather, she seemed too confused to understand--when he tried to explain. The most he could do was accept her lunch and the small set of items given, and he allowed her to shoo him out of the door.

...It was mildly disturbing that the lights had turned off as the door locked behind him, but no matter, he would just start this odd journey an try to find the others in the process. He doubted this was a kidnapping, not unless it was perfectly arranged and manipulated into the direct world structure of Auldrant as a whole--so he could only assume it was an unfamiliar, time-space destructive force of a fonic arte. An unexplained effect of a seventh fonon? Not necessarily a hyperresonance, not unless it was a powerful one they hadn't yet faced. But even Luke and Tear didn't seem this strong when teamed together... Nor Van Grants, even. He doubted Nebilim even had the ability to do something of this calibur, even if he awoke here after their cataclysmic battle against her. No, this was not normal, not normal at all. He'd definitely need to look into this when he returned to Malkuth, that was certain. Until then, he could explore a little.

But first, he needed to check his inventory. Sliding the backpack from his shoulers, he tugged the zipper open and peered inside. A sleeping bag attached to the bottom, a set of clothing, a package of travel snacks most likely meant for a child, a small, thin rope, and a ball. The ball was, by far, the most intriguing of the items due to the matching emblem on the backpack. It had a small, round button in the middle...

Shifting his thumb over it, he clicked it--

And it glowed. A light, dancing from the ball and splashing onto the ground, formed and morphed into a little sphere. A cell of sorts. Two large, molecular blobs not quite separated, surrounded in some sort of green liquid. What confused him the most was the face on the little creature. Two dark eyes, a little, pointed mouth, and... an odd cone on the side of its head. It seemed relatively harmless, if not peculiar. And, if he could be troubled to think so, it seemed a tad happy. Jade's red eyes couldn't help but focus on the creature, eyes studying it quite intensely. This was no ordinary science experiment, that was for sure. Nothing currently seen in the artes at all, nothing normal. It hovered, could move...

"So-lo!" it squeaked out to him.

"...so you can talk as well."

Jade wondered if this little monster was his. If so, he wanted to study it.
